Strawberries are the most popular berry fruit in the world and the United
States is the largest producer of these berries worldwide. Although they
have now become available pretty much year round, strawberries are at their
best during the Spring and mid Summer months.
When selecting organic strawberries look for fruit that appears fairly ripe
as strawberries do not ripen once they have been harvested. Make sure the
berries are plump with a full red color. Avoid strawberries that have a dull
color as they tend not be as sweet and are often tart.
Organic strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K,
manganese, potassium, folate, magnesium and B Vitamins . They are also a
very good source of dietary fiber, iodine and omega-3 fatty acids.
Additionally, Strawberries contain many beneficial phytonutrients that are
believed to promote good health.
According to studies by the Environmental Working Group, strawberries that
are grown using conventional farming methods are typically shown to be in
the top 12 foods that have the highest levels of pesticide residue. If you
want to avoid these risks but still enjoy strawberries, eating organic
berries is your best option. Enjoy this strawberry season and think organic! |
