| Market Update Week of July 21, 2008 | ![]() | ||
Overall Conditions: The combination of the recent heat wave coupled with over 800 fires in California have clearly had an affect on the California produce industry causing damage and availability issues with some of the crops. Vegetables Broccoli - The heat has created a very limited market on broccoli this week. As we move forward supplies should begin to open up. Cauliflower - Much like with broccoli, supplies are tight, but the market should begin to open up as we move forward. Celery - Good availability on celery and the market continues to soften. Chards - Good chard supplies this week and the market is softening. Corn - Corn from California is gapping this week. Kale - Good supplies this week on kale with a softening market. Leaf Lettuces - The warm temperatures have actually created an abundant supply of leaf lettuces. Supplies abound! Look for strong availability and a soft market for the remainder of the month. Leeks - Good supplies and a steady market. Potatoes - New crop red, white and yellow potatoes from California are available. New crop russets are available as well. Spinach - Tight supplies. Dehydration and wilting will be a problem due to the heat. Tomatoes - The layered tomato market is steady this week with good supplies. Fruit Apples - Northwest Red Delicious are cleaning up and we only have about 1-2 weeks on Gold Delicious as well until the new crop comes on. Galas remain limited with supplies mostly from New Zealand. Fuji apples are in fair supply as are Pink Ladies. Both are imported from Chile and New Zealand. Braeburn and Granny Smith apples remain very limited. Domestic Ginger Gold apples are expected to begin by the end of July followed by new crop Gala apples from California, Arizona and the Northwest in early/mid August. Avocados - Excellent supplies of California Hass. Citrus - Goods supplies of California Valencias available. Lemon supplies are getting tighter this week. California grapefruit supplies are in good supply with mostly large size fruit available. Limes are in good supply. Grapes - Overall market remains steady. Expect good supplies on new crop Thompson grapes in late July or early August. Mexican red seedless grapes are basically done. California red grapes are a little tight. Look for much better volume in about a week. Kiwi - New harvest kiwi from New Zealand are now arriving on a regular basis. Mangoes - The Haden variety is done. All red mangos are now Tommy Atkins variety until Kents start in another month. Nectarines/Peaches/Plums - California yellow nectarine supplies are peaking right now. White nectarines are also in good supply. Yellow peach volume from California remains steady. Plums are in excellent supply with very good pricing. Pluots are gapping this week. We expect to see some Dapple Dandies as move into next week. Pears - Good supplies of Argentinian Packham pears available through mid/end of July. These pears are priced to move! All other import varieties are finished. California Bartlett pears have begun in small quantities with the forecast being for similar volume as last year. So far, quality reports look favorable. Northwest Bartlett, red Bartlett and Star Krimson varieties should begin by the end of August. Look for Bosc and D’anjou pears to begin in mid September. *All information and forecasts in this report are based on current market conditions.
